Todd Lanning is a consultant and instructor with a formal education in computer science, practical software development experience and over 5 years of large litigation and forensic experience.
Mr. Lanning’s career in computer science started with application development and software engineering in 1999, focusing primarily on web-based and distributed architecture projects. These projects provided opportunities involving complex computer networking topics as well as a wide array of computer platforms and network configurations. Future software applications and topics would include advanced data mining and pattern matching applications, retail automation software and internet-enabled software systems. He continues to write software on a regular basis and works to stay current on new and emerging technologies.
After a number of years in software development, Mr. Lanning migrated into the legal industry in 2004 as a data mining and discovery specialist. As a consultant in a burgeoning electronic data discovery firm, he was responsible for all aspects of technical discovery from defining and performing targeted acquisition through trial and eventually data destruction; a forensic mindset and data-centric approach was a daily part of each project. Mr. Lanning has worked with dozens of large enterprises, including a significant number of Fortune100 and Fortune500 companies. Typical activities and acquisitions would involve dozens of custodians and dataset sizes ranging from handfuls of gigabytes to many terabytes of storage. As Texas Director of Operations, he was also responsible for the training and mentoring of several teams of consultants and enjoyed noted success in the aggressive world of electronic discovery.
Mr. Lanning holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University and a M.S. in Computer Science from Southern Methodist University. He is a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, EnCase IRFAD certified and a contributor to continuing legal education in the Dallas area.
